Naloxone is a spray that reverses the impact of an opioid overdose so the person can breathe.
Drugs like morphine, oxycodone, methadone, heroin and fentanyl can slow down or stop breathing. Naloxone is an antidote to restore normal breathing, saving the person’s life.
- Use naloxone in any suspected overdose.
- Naloxone can be given to children and teens, adults, and older adults.
The Signs of Opioid Overdose
Look for these signs:
- Cannot be woken up
- Breathing slowly or not breathing
- Choking, gurgling or snoring sounds
- Lips or nails blue
- Skin cold or clammy
- Pupils extremely small
Follow these steps.
When you see the signs of an overdose:
- Call 911 FIRST.
- Start CPR. Give one breath every five seconds.
- Use naloxone spray.
- It may be necessary to seek emergency care in an emergency department or to administer additional doses of naloxone.
